Robert Matijasec

Your Patent Attorney

I founded QED IP to help technical founders protect their innovations without the complexity and cost of large law firms. With my background as a USPTO patent examiner and software engineer, I understand both the technology you're building and exactly what the USPTO looks for in patent applications.

Credentials

  • USPTO Registration: No. 79,424 (Registered December 1, 2020)
  • Bar Admission: Missouri (Admitted September 16, 2015)
  • Former USPTO Examiner: Art Units 2498 & 2496 (June 2022 - October 2025)

Background

USPTO Patent Examiner Experience

From June 2022 to October 2025, I served as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Art Units 2498 and 2496. These art units handle some of the most technically complex patent applications in:

During my time at the USPTO, I examined hundreds of patent applications. I learned firsthand what makes applications succeed or fail, which technical details matter to examiners, and how to navigate the most common rejection grounds including abstract idea rejections under Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank and obviousness rejections under 35 U.S.C. § 103.

Technical Background

Before law school, I worked as a software engineer at Boeing, where I developed manned flight hardware for the F/A-18 flight simulator. This hands-on engineering experience gave me deep insight into complex technical systems and software development.

I understand the technical challenges you face because I've worked through them myself. Whether you're implementing neural networks, designing consensus mechanisms, or building secure systems, I speak your language.

Education

Why I Started QED IP

As a USPTO examiner, I saw brilliant innovations get rejected not because they weren't novel, but because the patent applications were drafted by attorneys who didn't understand the technology or how examiners evaluate these applications.

I started QED IP to bridge that gap. Technical founders need a patent attorney who:

When you work with QED IP, you work directly with me from start to finish. No handoffs to junior associates. No confusion about who's handling your case. Just straightforward, expert patent protection from someone who has been on both sides of the examination process.

Areas of Focus

I specialize in patent protection for:

Professional Approach

My approach to patent law is straightforward:

Technical Understanding First: I take the time to understand your technology thoroughly. I can read code, understand cryptographic primitives, and follow complex algorithmic logic.

Strategic Patent Drafting: I draft claims with examination in mind, anticipating common rejection grounds and positioning your innovation to survive scrutiny.

Transparent Communication: I explain the patent process in clear terms, set realistic expectations, and keep you informed throughout prosecution.

Efficient Process: My examiner experience allows me to navigate USPTO procedures efficiently, saving you time and money.
